Working With Occupational Therapists
Posted on
One of the most common things we hear from our customers is, "I just don't even know where to start!"
Disability can be very overwhelming for yourself and loved ones. You want to live in your own home for as long as possible, but you also want to be safe and secure. Occupational therapists are there to make that happen for you.
An occupational therapist is trained to assess your abilities, disabilities, home and environment, and your personal specific needs. And don't worry, this can all be done free of charge! With one quick phone call to your local VIHA office, you can set up an appointment to have an OT visit you in your home. They will sit down with you and discuss any medical or mobility issues you're dealing with.
Once your OT has an understanding of your specific needs, they will go over the different kinds of equipment that can improve your home and mobility, to keep you feeling safe and comfortable. Island Mediquip often works closely with occupational therapists in providing this equipment to you. After an OT has done their first assessment, they will often contact our sales reps and have us bring some equipment options to your home, so you can try them out before making any purchases.
Think this is only helpful for the elderly? Think again!
Many people who are suffering from injuries or recovering from surgeries find occupational therapists very helpful. Often people who get injured have no idea that services like this exist and can help make their recovery easier! Whether it's short-term disability or long term recovery, an occupational therapist will help you purchase or rent the equipment you need to get through your situation.
