New Year Resolutions – Plan for Success in 2024

Posted on

Happy New Year! As we welcome in 2024 this is the time not only to reflect on the past year, but also make resolutions and set goals for the new year. This is a great time to set personal goals for yourself, as resolutions for the new year is such a well-recognized practice. Everyone is making plans, which creates a great mutual support network. Of course it is also well-recognized that many resolutions fail, however it does not have to be that way. Here are some things to consider if you’re going to make resolutions and want them to be successful.

The Journey So Far

Before planning a fresh chapter, it’s helpful to pause and look back over the milestones and hurdles of the past year. Give a shout-out to your victories, no matter how small or modest they might seem. Then identify concrete areas where positive changes can be made. This helps to craft resolutions that are relevant and within reach.

Set Wanted and Realistic Resolutions

Often when people set resolutions, they think about what they should do instead of what they want to do, or they think about what they should stop doing, rather than what they actually want to achieve. To be successful, it helps if the goal is something that you really want to happen, not just what you think you should be going for.

It can also be easy to get caught up in setting lofty goals that sound good, but then when you don’t achieve them, it is so discouraging and deflating. Instead of abandoning overly ambitious resolutions, ensure that they are attainable, and have a real plan behind them. For example, it’s not just “I want to exercise more”, it’s more like “I need to get a walker to help me achieve X number of steps a day, twice a week”.

Do little goals that contribute to your overall wellbeing. Identify what can be achieved and what supports are needed to make them happen. Reduce the amount of barriers, no matter how small they are. Sometimes it can be as simple as keeping a walking stick by the door instead of in the closet, or putting the chocolates out of sight so they’re not always tempting you. Whatever your goal, make sure every step is as smooth as possible to achieve it.

Tips for Sticking to Resolutions

If you’re serious about achieving your resolutions, staying committed requires a strategic approach. Build a support system with friends or family who share similar goals, or at least are equally committed to seeing things through. Gradually incorporate changes into your routine, allowing your body and mind to adapt. And remember, celebrate every small victory! It’s the collective impact of these wins that will move you towards your goal.

Choose resolutions that you really actually want to achieve, and make them positive. Don’t just be reactive to your current environment, but think about what is going to make the best impact for you in 2024. It doesn’t have to be a huge goal, and in fact aiming lower rather than higher can be a better idea, as you have a better chance of accomplishing it. You can even make several smaller goals instead of one larger one.

Here are some tips to help make your resolution a reality.

  • Write it down. Having a goal physically visible will help you to stay on track and remember it often.
  • Be flexible. Things don’t always go exactly the way we want, and it can be discouraging if something goes wrong. But that doesn’t mean the whole goal needs to be gone, just adapt as best you can.
  • Tell people around you of your resolution, as this will help hold you accountable. Better yet, have the same goal as someone and commit to it together.
  • Have a defined beginning for when you’re starting to enact the resolution. This helps with a clear timeline and making the whole thing real.
  • Visualization is a powerful tool for supporting goals. How will you feel when you accomplish it? What will it look like? Imagine yourself in that position, and work towards it.
